Riding a motorcycle can be a fun and rewarding experience, but they are more susceptible to traffic accidents due to their small size. Easily hiding in other vehicle’s blind spots, drivers may not be aware of the motorcyclist while changing lanes. Additionally, even small road obstacles can cause the motorcycle rider to lose control and wreck. A small bump in the road may be barely noticeable to a larger vehicle, but it may cause severe damage or injury to a motorcyclist.
Following are four common motorcycle road hazards you should be aware of:
- Unstable or Slippery Surfaces: Unlike four-wheel vehicles, motorcycles are more likely to lose traction on roads covered in water, ice, snow, or oil. Even loose gravel can be a serious risk on some motorcycles. When approaching these types of surfaces, reduce your speed and avoid sudden turns or lane changes. Properly maintain your motorcycle to ensure your tires have the proper air pressure and tread depth, and monitor the weather before every ride.
- Rough Roads: Many roads have potholes, bumps, cracks, gravel, and other debris that can cause a motorcyclist to lose balance. Be diligent and pay close attention to the roadway ahead of you to prepare for and safely avoid these obstacles.
- Objects & Debris: While larger vehicles can safely navigate over small items and trash, it is much safer to avoid these obstructions while on a motorcycle. If you cannot avoid the obstacle, push down on the handlebars and lift your body off the seat use your legs to provide shock absorption. Pushing down on the motorcycle’s pegs will offer more stability. Crossing planks and other similar objects at a 90-degree angle minimizes the risk of losing control.
- Railroad Crossings: Railroad tracks can prevent an unstable surface that throws the motorcyclist off balance. When approaching a railroad crossing, try to cross the tracks at a 90-degree angle and maintain a steady throttle. When approaching the railroad crossing, slow down and then add speed as you cross. This will lighten the front-end of the bike and give you greater control.
